Purdue taps astronaut Cernan as credit card image

WEST LAFAYETTE -

Purdue University is ready to roll out its new alumni credit card featuring the last man on the moon, but it's delayed ads touting the card so it can honor the first man on the moon.

The Journal & Courier reports Purdue pulled ads featuring astronaut Eugene Cernan as the new spokesman for the card from this weekend's opening football game out of respect for astronaut Neil Armstrong, who died Aug. 25.

Purdue Federal Credit Union president Bob Falk says the timing of the ads is "unfortunate and ironic." They will now begin airing Sept. 8.

The advertisements feature Cernan paying for a cup of coffee with the card in a restaurant.

Falk says Cernan was a "no-brainer" to replace Drew Brees when the NFL quarterback's contract expired
