Scrap metal thieves strike Fishers neighborhood

FISHERS -

Scrap metal thieves have a new target, and it's something found on many homes in central Indiana. Fishers Police are investigating five different incidents in the same neighborhood where the thieves made off with the metal basement window well covers.

Fishers Police have received reports from five residents in the Tanglewood neighborhood (126th Street and Pennington Road) since Aug. 25th.

Police believe the thieves wanted to remain as inconspicuous as possible. Someone stole the window well cover from one house and then went next door, jumped the fence, stole the cover here and then went to another house.

Fishers mother Susan Whitehouse is one of a string of victims who had their window well covers stolen. Now she's looking at replacing it for a few hundred dollars.

"We definitely want to get a cover because of our kids. We are afraid one of our kids will fall into it. There are a lot of young kids on our street, so we will have to eventually get it covered," she said.

Fishers police believe the suspects may try to sell the missing window well covers at scrap yards. Police say you should be on the lookout for people taking other scrap yard items like A/C units, aluminum siding and gutters, copper wire, metal lawn furniture and the list goes on.

Tony Dal Santo still has his window well cover, but he showed us how easy it is to carry away.

"We talked about getting another grate, maybe something that is plastic. That way if someone does come around they are not getting anything out of it," he said.

Since locking the window well cover is not an option because it would violate fire safety codes.

"For right now we are going to keep our fingers crossed and hope we are not the next victim," he said.

People like Dal Santo hope not to fall prey to scrappers. Now that neighbors are talking about the missing window well covers, from now on they will be on defense just in case thieves decide to come back.

Environmental Pickup compiled this list of items that thieves may target at your house or business.
