Union: Indianapolis symphony threatening to shorten season

INDIANAPOLIS -

A musicians union says the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra's management is threatening to cancel the first two weeks of its upcoming season if musicians fail to accept management's contract proposal.

The Indianapolis Business Journal reports the musicians' negotiating committee said Friday symphony executives have given a Sept. 7 deadline to accept their proposal or the organization will cancel its shows on Sept. 14-15 and Sept. 21-23.

Musician's negotiating committee chairman Richard Graef says in a prepared statement that the union is continuing to negotiate in good faith with symphony representatives but is "dismayed to learn that they are threatening to cancel the first two concerts of the season."

The union says the symphony's administrators are seeking significant contract concessions that would turn the full-time orchestra into a part-time operation.
