Chris Lighty: hip-hop manager dies, suspected suicide

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK -

One of the top people working behind the scenes in the hip-hop industry is dead - an apparent suicide.

Authorities say Chris Lighty was found dead in his New York City apartment yesterday. They say he died of a gunshot wound to the head - and that the wound appeared self-inflicted. Police also say while there was no note, there was a gun nearby and there were no signs that anyone had forced their way into the apartment.

Lighty helped artists like Mariah Carey, Diddy and 50 Cent make the move beyond music and videos. He once suggested that LL Cool J - who had a habit of licking his lips - promote lip balm.

He founded the Violator management company after working his way through the ranks of a company run by Russell Simmons.

Chris Lighty was just 44 years old and leaves behind two children.
