Indiana Archaeology Month focuses on underwater sites

History buffs can meet archaeologists and learn about the state's past during Indiana Archaeology Month in September.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources the focus of this year's activities will be underwater archaeology because of a recent surge of interest in the identification, protection and interpretation of the state's underwater cultural resources.

The agency various archaeology events for all ages are held every September by universities, museums, organizations and individuals throughout Indiana. Archaeologists have recorded more than 60,000 sites in Indiana since the early 1800s, helping to shape public understanding of the prehistoric and historic peoples who lived here.
