Handgun stolen in NY 38 years ago turns up in Indiana

STAFFORD, NY -

Authorities say a handgun stolen from a western New York store nearly 40 years ago has resurfaced in Indiana.

In a story reported by Indiana's Greencastle Banner and republished by The Daily News of Batavia, police in Putnam County say the .22-caliber revolver was discharged at a home in Reelsville early Monday. No one was injured, and the man who fired the gun surrendered to police.

Putnam County sheriff's deputies ran the gun's serial number and learned it was among more than 30 firearms stolen in 1974 from a store in the Genesee County, N.Y., town of Stafford, more than 500 miles east of Reelsville.

The gun will be sent back to Genesee County, where police will attempt to return it to the original owner, if possible.
