Groundbreaking set for Ohio River Bridges project

Posted: Updated:
JEFFERSONVILLE -

The long-awaited project to build two new Ohio River bridges in the Louisville, Ky., area is reaching a milestone on the Indiana side.

The governors of Indiana and Kentucky are scheduled to attend a Thursday morning groundbreaking for the project that has been discussed for decades. Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez is also expected to attend the event in Jeffersonville.

Indiana recently awarded a construction contract for an extension of a road that ultimately will form part of the first exit on the Indiana side of the future East End bridge.

The $2.6 billion project will include building a bridge in downtown Louisville and another on the east side of the metropolitan area.

Construction on the main crossings is expected to begin in earnest in early 2013.
