Contaminated gasoline sold in Indianapolis area

INDIANAPOLIS -

Eyewitness News has learned that some central Indiana customers could be affected by a recent BP gas recall.

After repeated denials, there is proof that BP sold bad gasoline at dozens of stations in and around Indianapolis. The gas, which could have damaged your car was pumped at stations in Indianapolis, Fishers, Greenwood and other cities.

At first, the company reported that the contaminated gas was only sold in northern Indiana. But on Wednesday, it was revealed that several gas stations in central Indiana also received the bad fuel.

For the better part of three weeks, Lisa Donica's blue four-door sedan sat idle. She says the car wouldn't start.

"When I was driving it back home from Plainfield, it did lurch on me," said Donica.

By the time she got home, the car was barely running. The next day, she called a tow truck to take it to her mechanic - an experience that brought her to tears.

As it turns out, the fuel pump in the vehicle had failed and the repair bill was $300. The reason she believes the fuel pump failed, is gasoline from BP.

"Yes, it was BP for sure, and I hate to think of all the people around me that got gas that day," she said.

She is one of more than 5,000 drivers in Indiana that have already filed complaints with BP after fueling up with some of the 2.1 million gallons of gasoline recalled in three states. contaminated gasoline.

"So what's happened with BP is, up at the BP Whiting refinery, they had a polymer that got into some of the gasoline," said Tom Brody, the Chief Economist for the Attorney General's office.

Brody's job is to keep on eye on gas companies and he says 200 gas stations in Indiana sold the contaminated gas.

Several million gallons of the contaminated gas was sold in Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin, causing problems for drivers.

"Hard starting, non-starting or shaking of the engine," Brody said.

Consumers can file complaints with the Attorney General's office and with BP. There have already been a few class action lawsuits filed.

According to a list released by BP, over 20 gas stations in Indianapolis and nearby cities sold the gas. Consumers who purchased this tainted gasoline have experienced engine problems ranging from engine stalling and difficult starting to rough idling and other fuel system-related issues.

The oil company says customers whose vehicles have experienced hard starting or other problems caused by the fuel should send it an email at bpconsum@bp.com or call 1-800-333-3991. Dean says customers should provide receipts for the repairs and fuel purchase, if available, or credit card bills showing the fuel purchase at affected retailers.

BP believes a 50,000-barrel batch of gasoline shipped from its Whiting fuel storage terminal Aug. 13-17 contained a higher level of a polymeric residue.

A class action lawsuit has been filed by Cohen & Malad, LLP to recover damages for the thousands of customers affected.

According to Cohen & Malad, initial reports from BP stated that over 2.1 million gallons of tainted gas were identified and recalled. The company recently revised that amount to over 4.7 million gallons of contaminated fuel.

Consumers who are interested in more information about the class action lawsuit are requested to call Cohen & Malad, LLP at 317-636-6481 or toll free at 1-866-446-7478 or email bpgas@cohenmalad.com
