Man convicted in stabbing in Crown Point square

CROWN POINT -

A 23-year-old man has been convicted of fatally stabbing another man during a fight on a northwestern Indiana city's courthouse square.

The Lake County jury found Jeffrey Nemcek of Crown Point guilty of reckless homicide Tuesday night for the stabbing that killed 26-year-old Brandon Huseman.

The Times of Munster reports jurors cleared Nemcek of murder charges in the attack that happened about 1:30 a.m. last Thanksgiving Day in downtown Crown Point.

Testimony presented conflicting versions of the confrontation between Nemcek and a group of as many as eight people that included Huseman. Prosecutors argued that Nemcek was the aggressor, while defense attorney Kevin Milner maintained Nemcek acted in self-defense during a struggle with people who had been drinking alcohol for several hours.
