Evansville school district reaches deal over computer woes

EVANSVILLE -

A southern Indiana school district won't have to pay about $2.8 million it still owed on thousands of troublesome netbook computers it bought for students.

A lawsuit settlement between the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. and computer maker Hewlett-Packard calls for the school district to get ownership of the some 7,300 computers and receive $50,000 for repair costs.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports the company doesn't admit any fault in the settlement

School district attorney Patrick Shoulders says the settlement ends the district's obligation to pay for the computers. The district agreed in 2009 to pay $3.3 million over four years, but soon stopped making payments.

The district says the model's battery casing prevented them from closing properly, a problem that frequently caused the computer's screen to crack.
