Indian tribe includes casino in Northern Indiana land plan

SOUTH BEND -

An Indian tribe is including a possible casino in its development plan for land it owns in northern Indiana.

The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians is planning what it calls a tribal village for the 164-acre site on South Bend's south side.

Pokagon Band chairman Matt Wesaw tells the South Bend Tribune that the tribe's main focus for the site is providing housing and other services for about 500 members living in the area and that it has no time frame for opening a casino.

Wesaw tells WNDU-TV that the Michigan-based tribe needed to include the casino among the possibilities for the development plan it submitted to federal officials.

The tribe already operates the Four Winds Casino in nearby New Buffalo, Mich.
