100-acre Rockville, Indiana site gets special protection

ROCKVILLE -

A 100-acre western Indiana site that contains craggy bluffs and rare stands of hemlock trees has been acquired by the state under a program that permanently protects riverside lands.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says Craig and Diane Green recently sold their land along Sugar Creek in Parke for the state's Healthy Rivers Initiative, which has protected nearly 30,000 acres of land in its first two years.

The forested parcel features thick white oaks, towering tulip poplars and is also home to northern hemlock trees, which are uncommon in Indiana. Some of the site's hemlocks may be two centuries old.

Craig Green says he and his wife always wanted to make sure the land they called "pristine" is protected from development.
