Wayne County tackles issue of repeat offenders

RICHMOND -

Wayne County officials are using $150,000 in grants to develop a leadership program designed to lower recidivism rates and help inmates become productive members of society upon their release.

The county received $100,000 from the Annie E. Casey Foundation and $50,000 from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute to develop a results-based leadership program to tackle the problem of repeat offenders.

Chief deputy probation officer Kory George tells the Palladium-Item Wayne County qualified for the grants because of its crime rate. Nearly 40 percent of Wayne County inmates released between 2007 and 2010 were back in prison within three years.

George says teams from the community are looking at issues including employment, education and training and substance abuse as they form a plan to help break the cycle.
