INDIANAPOLIS -

The Indianapolis Zoo is beginning work on its International Orangutan Center.

The center's plans include an open-air "highway" for orangutans to travel overhead and a 150-foot beacon that will be turned on by orangutans in the center.

The Zoo plans to begin work next week and hopes to finish the center by May 2014.

Gov. Mitch Daniels, Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard and members of the Indianapolis Zoological Society Board of Directors plan to join Indianapolis Zoo CEO Michael Crowther for the Sept. 4 groundbreaking.
