WEST LAFAYETTE -

A memorial at Purdue University was held Monday for space hero and alumnus Neil Armstrong.

Former astronaut Greg Harbaugh remembered being inspired to pursue the space program as he watched those grainy black and white images of Armstrong stepping foot on the moon in July 1969.

Harbaugh said the very private Apollo 11 commander would have said two things were he in the program. First, the modest Armstrong would have called it all too much.

Second, Harbaugh says, he would have called on America to go exploring again and return to the moon and travel to Mars.

Armstrong died Saturday at age 82. He graduated from Purdue in 1955.
