Indiana attorney general sues former school official over funds

TELL CITY -

The state attorney general's office has sued a former southern Indiana school superintendent for more than $615,000 in public money an audit found he owes the district and the state.

The state filed the suit against former Cannelton school Superintendent Marion A. Chapman on Friday in Perry County Circuit Court. The suit also asks a judge to freeze Chapman's bank account and other assets.

A state audit issued Aug. 14 alleged that Chapman overpaid himself by more than $200,000, quit paying the school's federal taxes, and misspent hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Chapman was superintendent from July 2005 to Dec. 22, 2011, when the school board fired him.

A phone number listed for Chapman was disconnected when The Associated Press called seeking comment.
