INDIANAPOLIS -
Gas prices are on the rise this morning around Central Indiana. But there are still some good deals to be had.
There are big differences in price, depending on which gas station you pick.
The Speedway at Washington and White River is among the highest around, but just a short distance away - at another Speedway also on Washington - a gallon of gas is 50-cents less.
That Speedway station at Washington and State offers quite a bargain at $3.39 a gallon. We're seeing big differences in gas prices all around town. That's the lowest we found overnight. The middle range is at a Marathon at Harding and Morris streets at $3.57 per gallon. Then the high end in the $3.80's, which we saw at the Phillips station at West 16th and Tremont.
The average for gas in Indiana overall is actually lower than the national average. We are paying on average about 20-cents less a gallon than we were just a week ago, but 20 cents more than a month ago.
Heading into the Labor Day holiday weekend, if you plan to travel, you can keep tabs on prices and where to find the best deals.
But will you shop around? That's a question we'll be asking consumers throughout the morning.
So why such differences in such close proximity?
Competition drives some of the difference. If you're in an area where there are aggressive pricers, you'll probably find lower prices. In an area without a lot of stations, and it's not very competitive, the price will be higher.
Oil companies charge each station different pricing depending on factors like location. That means a station can pay as much as 50-cents a gallon more per gallon than another brand, and that cost is passed on to you.
So it may pay to shop around, especially if you're traveling. Don't fill up before you go, buy gas on the road. And though you may have your favorite place to fill up, the cheapest gas may not always be at the same station every time.
