INDIANAPOLIS -
A man wanted in connection with an early morning shooting and assault was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after an hours-long standoff with police.
Indianapolis Metro Police say Courtney Sarver, 29, of Indianapolis, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound from a rifle. Sarver was found in a detached garage at his home in the 4800 block of Leone Drive with the rifle lying next to him after SWAT teams from IMPD and Lawrence went inside.
It started Wednesday morning when police were called to investigate a shooting on 3757 North Sadlier Drive on the east side near 38th and I-465. That happened just before 8:00 am.
Police say Sarver shot Steven Tam, 35, of Indianapolis, and beat him with an oar. Detectives also believe that Sarver assaulted Kiona Leland, 39, of Indianapolis, using a gun and the oar. Sarver was Leland's ex-boyfriend.
Tam is in critical condition. Leland is listed in serious condition.
The standoff went on for several hours before police found Sarver dead inside the home.
Investigators believe the incident began as a domestic-related aggravated assault.
St. Lawrence Catholic School, Brook Park Elementary and Brook Park Early Learning Center were on lockdown during the standoff.
The man's family members were on the scene and police tried to negotiate with him to come out and surrender.
