Holy Angels demolition today

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

A historic church on the near northwest side is being demolished Wednesday.

Holy Angels Catholic Church at 28th and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard has been a fixture in the Indianapolis African-American community for 109 years. Built in 1903, it's the last remaining wood-framed Catholic church in the county, and just one of two predominantly black Catholic congregations in Indianapolis.

But the Marion County Board of Health determined the aging structure was unsafe for its parishioners, and cited the church for several health code violations. Water leaked through holes in the roof, causing mold.

Holy Angels celebrated Mass for the last time inside the church last October. Since then, they've held Mass at a Marian University chapel.

Because the building had deteriorated so much, it wasn't feasible to repair it. Instead, the church will be demolished Wednesday morning, and the congregation plans to rebuild.

The lead pastor hopes crews can at least save the bell from the tower so it can be installed in the new church building.
