Hundreds mourn Elkhart girl fatally shot at home

ELKHART -

Hundreds of mourners gathered outside the northern Indiana home of a 7-year-old girl who was fatally shot in the head when three men tried to break into the family's house.

Many of those attending the candlelight vigil Monday evening in Elkhart said they couldn't believe what had happened to Kristyana Jackson. She died Sunday after being shot when she and her mother returned from a high school football game Friday night.

Her father John Jackson was wounded in the attack. The Elkhart Truth reports his left arm was in a sling as he asked those in the crowd to hug their children.

Police haven't made any. Christy Bailey tells the South Bend Tribune that her children used to play with Kristyana and that the shooting makes her feel vulnerable.
