Indiana State Fair attendance down slightly in 2012

INDIANAPOLIS -

The Indiana State Fair wrapped up over the weekend, drawing about 20,000 fewer visitors than last year.

This year the fair attracted over 70,000 visitors on three different days, for a total of 853,941 for the entire run. That's down slightly from 872,312 in 2011, and still significantly down from 952,020 in 2010 and over 965,000 in 2009.

This year the fair was dogged by thunderstorms and hot weather, but fair organizers continue to lure visitors with discounts and promotions. They point to a new $18 three-day advance admission pass as a big success, along with $2 Tuesday specials.

State Fair concerts were moved to Conseco Fieldhouse after 2011's fatal stage collapse accident. However, the fair says its Free Stage at the fairgrounds was still a popular attraction.

Next year's State Fair runs Aug. 2 - 18.
