Meeting at Boner Community Center to address abandoned lots

Posted: Updated:

The problems left behind when a home or lot is abandoned affect the whole community - crime, fires and lower property values among them. On Monday night, city leaders will try to get the support of the community to do something about it.

The corner of Raymond and East Streets represents the problem on the south side. There are four abandoned homes and an abandoned lot.

City council members John Barth and Jeff Miller say this is a perfect example of what is happening all over the city. So they are hosting meetings to bring community members up to speed on what they plan to do about it. The first meeting, focusing on vacant lots, is Monday night at the Boner Community Center on East 10th Street.

Councillor Jeff Miller said there is no easy answer. "Tearing down the homes in not the answer all the time, because you end up with an abandoned lot that brings trash and weeds and litter."

The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. If you can't make it, you can still get your opinions and questions addressed by using the hashtag #communityindy on Twitter.
