SCHERERVILLE -

A northwest Indiana town plans to break ground on a Sept. 11 memorial on the eve of the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

The Times of Munster reports Schererville's memorial will include an I-beam from a World Trade Center tower. The 1,931-pound, 14-foot-long beam is 16 inches wide and 12 inches high. Schererville received the piece of slightly bent steel last Sept. 9.

Schererville Fire Chief Joseph Kruzan says town officials decided to have the event the night of Sept. 10 instead of Sept. 11 so more people will be available to attend the ceremony.

Schererville's 9/11 memorial committee wrote a letter to the Port Authority of New York after hearing other communities had been given pieces of the towers.
