Land swap deadline looms for new Cline Avenue span

Posted: Updated:
EAST CHICAGO -

The state has just over two weeks left to conclude a critical land-swap agreement with the developer of a private northwestern Indiana toll bridge to replace a span shut down in 2009.

The Times of Munster reported Sunday a letter of intent from the city of East Chicago says Indiana has until Sept. 4 to cede the right of way for the bridge to United Bridge Partners in exchange for land the developer owns. Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Will Wingfield tells the newspaper the state still hopes to meet the deadline.

The state shut down the old Cline Avenue bridge over the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal after inspections showed it had become dangerously weak. It carried traffic to a casino and steel mills along Lake Michigan.
