Pedrosa claims Indy pole on day full of crashes

INDIANAPOLIS -

Spain's Dani Pedrosa won his second Indianapolis Grand Prix pole, completing the 16-turn, 2.621 mile road course in 1 minute, 38.813 seconds Saturday.

Points leader Jorge Lorenzo, of Spain, was second in 1:38.913 and Andrea Dovizioso of Italy was third at 1:39.235.

However, pole favorite Casey Stoner crashed early in qualifying. An MRI showed a torn ligament after doctors originally thought he'd broken his right ankle. It's unclear whether he'll race Sunday.

American Ben Spies, the 2010 Indy pole winner, also slid off his bike but was not injured.

MotoGP officials say American Nicky Hayden regained consciousness after a scary crash in which his motorcycle spun sideways, throwing him off the bike and skidding across the track.
