Pet food pantry opens in Muncie as need rises

Posted: Updated:
MUNCIE -

A new pet food pantry in Muncie hopes to help struggling pet owners feed and keep their four-legged friends.

Action for Animals has opened the pantry after seeing calls for help increase in recent years. Advocacy group president Teresa Sparks says she gets an average of 25 calls a week seeking help feeding pets.

The Star Press reports the pantry has long received donated pet food from manufacturers, but those items had been distributed only to animal rescue agencies, humane societies and animal shelters across the state.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates between 500,000 and 1 million pets in the United States have been on the verge of becoming homeless since the recession began.
