LAFAYETTE -

Tippecanoe County officials and family members say a single-vehicle crash in Florida has killed longtime county Coroner Martin David Avolt.

County Commissioner Tom Murtaugh says the 70-year-old Lafayette resident died Thursday morning when his vehicle went down an embankment.

Murtaugh says Avolt's grandson was in the vehicle, too, but was not injured.

The accident occurred in Dunedin, Florida., about 20 miles west of Tampa.

The Republican was completing his fifth-four-year term as coroner since 1984. Murtaugh says he expects Donna Avolt will fulfill her late husband's duties. She has served two terms as coroner.

The couple's daughter, Kathy Avolt of Lafayette, says her parents were visiting other family members in Florida.
