Lightning sparks Pike Township apartment fire

INDIANAPOLIS -

Lightning is being named as the cause of a fire at a northwest Indianapolis apartment fire Thursday.

Pike Township FIre Chief Gerald George tells Eyewitness News a lightning strike likely caused the fire at the Deer Cross Apartments around 6:15 p.m. Thursday. Firefighters arrived to find fire and smoke coming from the roof of the 24-unit building.

Twelve apartment units were affected by the fire. The residents of those units are being relocated, with help from apartment management and the American Red Cross.

Witnesses told investigators they saw a lightning strike in the area around the time the fire started.
