Indianapolis west side church to be demolished

INDIANAPOLIS -

A historic and predominately African American church on the city's west side is being demolished.

Holy Angels Catholic Church, 2822 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street closed its doors in October 2011 after the condition of the 109-year-old church raised health concerns.

At the time Pastor Kenneth Taylor said, "The roof has deteriorated so badly, there's water coming in several places."

He said over the years, that led to extensive damage in the ceiling and walls, causing mold problems. A lengthy study confirmed the only viable option was closing the church and demolishing the building.

While the church building is coming down, parish life continues for the 425 members. Last fall, the parish began celebrating Sunday Mass at Marian University's chapel.
