What college students need to remember on move-in day

INDIANAPOLIS -

Thousands of students are moving into dorms across the state Wednesday, most notably at Indiana University in Bloomington and in downtown Indianapolis at IUPUI.

IUPUI a busy place. Not only is there campus life, but it's also right in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. Moving in means bringing a lot of electronics and valuables. Police advise that students don't let not let their guard down in the excitement of getting moved in and starting classes.

"Our biggest crime out here is property theft. It's an opportunity thing. You need three things to have a crime committed: opportunity, ability and desire. You can't take away desire, you can't take away ability but you can take opportunity," said David Briggs, IUPUI Police.

Keeping items like cell phones and laptops out of sight in the car and even in study areas is one way of limiting opportunities.

Police also suggest the "buddy system" while walking around any campus, not just IUPUI. For safety, walking escorts are available for IUPUI students from 6 p.m. to midnight.

Eyewitness News will have a live report from IU Bloomington coming up at noon. This story will be updated.
