EVANSVILLE -

Indiana State Police say a motorist late for an Evansville court appearance was clocked doing 119 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Troopers patrolling a high-crash stretch of Indiana 62 west of Evansville Tuesday morning spotted a car passing several vehicles, then lost track of it. Soon, another trooper spotted the car returning to the highway from a side road.

Troopers arrested 24-year-old Joshua Smith of Omaha, Ill., on preliminary charges of resisting arrest and reckless driving. He was being held without bond in the Vanderburgh County Jail pending a Wednesday court appearance. Online jail records didn't indicate if he had an attorney.

Sgt. Todd Ringle says Smith was late for an appearance in Vanderburgh Circuit Court on charges of drug possession and failure to stop after an accident.
