South Bend city council votes to subpoena mayor

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH BEND -

The South Bend city council has voted to serve with the mayor with a subpoena compelling him to release police department recordings of phone conversations that were part of a federal investigation.

The council approved the subpoena on an 8-1 vote Monday night, citing legal advice from an attorney who says taping the conversations among officers was legal.

The South Bend Tribune reports Mayor Pete Buttigieg says his attorney told him listening to the tapes would violate federal law. He hopes letting a judge decide will resolve the issue so city officials can focus on other concerns.

Buttigieg demoted the city's police chief in March and fired the police communications director after federal authorities notified him that the department had violated the Federal Wiretap Act.
