Police investigate body found in Pigeon Creek

Posted: Updated:

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Evansville police say they're suspicious about the death of a man whose body has been found in a creek.

Authorities recovered the body of 32-year-old Jody Payne of Evansville from Pigeon Creek on Monday morning after a nearby property owner reported it.

Payne's SUV was found further upstream, and police spokesman Sgt. Jason Collum says investigators believe Payne was driving on off-road trails near the creek when the vehicle somehow ended up in the water. He says there's nothing to indicate a vehicle crash killed Payne.

Collum tells the Evansville Courier & Press the death will be treated as suspicious until shown otherwise.

The time of death isn't known yet. Family members contacted by investigators say they had not seen Payne for about 10 days.
