BLOOMINGTON -

Friends say former longtime Indiana Congressman Lee Hamilton and his wife Nancy were still settling into their new life in Bloomington when she died after being run over by her own car.

Authorities say 82-year-old Nancy Hamilton's car was apparently not in park when it rolled over her as she walked behind it to retrieve a pet from the other side during a trip to a veterinarian's office on Saturday.

Former Bloomington City Council president Charlotte Zietlow tells The Herald-Times that the Hamiltons were becoming involved in the city after moving there from Washington. Zietlow says Nancy Hamilton was active in the arts and painted landscapes and portraits.

Lee Hamilton represented southern Indiana in Congress for more than 30 years until 1999. The couple had three children and five grandchildren.
