Fight continues over NW Indiana town deer cull plans

Posted: Updated:
OGDEN DUNES -

Officials in a town along Indiana's Lake Michigan shore are moving ahead with plans for a deer hunt even though some residents continue to oppose it.

Ogden Dunes resident Bernadette Slawinski tells The Times of Munster she believes town officials are ignoring research she did on alternatives to the hunt. She is a member of a deer management task force created after the town stopped a similar deer cull in January.

Town Council President Allen Johnson said the board voted 4-1 to seek a deer cull permit after the state rejected steps such as trapping and moving deer and using insecticides to kill ticks on the deer.

Johnson says he believes the town has too many deer, presenting worries of diseases and safety on the streets.
