Andrew Luck's first NFL throw was a 63-yard touchdown pass, and the rookie led Indianapolis to three first-half touchdown drives and a 38-3 victory over St. Louis in Sunday's preseason opener.
For Colts fans, it was like a jolt from the past. Fourteen years earlier, Peyton Manning's first NFL throw was a 48-yard TD pass to Marvin Harrison.
This time, Luck, under pressure, dumped off a short screen pass to Donald Brown, who darted up the field, then cut across and outran the Rams' defense for the score.
Luck finished 10 of 16 for 188 yards with two TDs in 24 plays for Indy (No. 32 in the AP Pro32).
Sam Bradford, the No. 1 pick in 2010, was 7 of 9 for 57 yards in two series for the Rams (No. 28)
Andrew Luck and the Colts added two more touchdowns before half-time and the defense held the Rams to a field goal to lead 21 - 3.
The Colts got Luck in the NFL draft, and on Sunday's first offensive play, they got lucky again.
Andrew Luck, the No. 1 pick in April's draft, hooked up with Donald Brown on a 63-yard TD pass - his first NFL throw.
No, it wasn't exactly a textbook pass play. Luck, in the face of pressure, dumped the ball off to Brown, who started up the field, cut from left to right and outran the St. Louis defense to the end zone for a 7-0 lead. The Rams did not give up a throw of more than 50 yards during the preseason last year.
It was a reminder of the past for Colts fans. Peyton Manning's first NFL throw was an 8-yard completion to Marvin Harrison, who took it to the end zone.
Colts receiver Donnie Avery won't get a chance to face his old team after all.
Indianapolis says two key free-agent acquisitions - Avery and defensive end Cory Redding - will not play in the preseason opener Sunday against St. Louis. Both were injured in practice during the past week. Avery is out with a bruised left thigh. Redding injured his left elbow, but the Colts have not disclosed the severity of the injury.
Also out for the Colts are offensive guard Justin Anderson and defensive tackle Josh Chapman, who have not yet practiced, and outside linebacker Tim Fugger, who was just activated Saturday.
The Rams will be without receiver Danario Alexander (hamstring) and defensive tackle Trevor Laws, who hasn't practiced over the past week because of an undisclosed leg injury.
