Prosecutor: Police justified in fatal shooting

Posted: Updated:
BLOOMFIELD -

A southern Indiana prosecutor says police were justified in their fatal shooting of a man who shot and wounded two officers during a standoff.

A report released Friday by Greene County Prosecutor Jarrod Holtsclaw states that each officer who fired a shot, including the detective who fired the single shot that killed 25-year-old Michael Lane Jr., was justified in doing so under Indiana law.

The Herald-Times reports that Holtsclaw also says that had Lane survived the July 4 shootout, he would have faced multiple counts of attempted murder and battery.

During the standoff in Owensburg, Lane fired at two Greene County deputies responding to a reported domestic disturbance. One deputy suffered leg wounds from shotgun pellets and the other was treated for a shoulder wound.
