INDIANAPOLIS -

A skull found along the bank of the White River in July is not that of missing Indiana University student Lauren Spierer.

Spierer went missing in June 2011. Since then, anytime human remains have been discovered in the state, her parents have been anxiously awaiting test results to determine if they belong to their daughter.

The Marion County coroner's office says the skull found near the White River last month has "characteristics consistent with those of an east or southeast Asian male." The coroner will extract DNA from the skull to make an identification.

Spierer's parents made another public plea last week for information leading to the whereabouts of their daughter. Charlene Spierer described waiting for the test results on the skull as "agony."

Thursday, police detained an armed man who claimed to have knowledge about Spierer's case. They later determined that he did not know anything about the case that couldn't be learned through media reports. He was released after a mental health evaluation.
