State rejects NE Indiana town's sewage plant request

HUNTERTOWN -

State officials have conditionally denied a northeastern Indiana town's request to build a new $11.2 million sewage treatment plant.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management says it has pollution concerns and Huntertown already has adequate treatment from Fort Wayne. The Journal Gazette reports that the plant would daily discharge about 575,000 gallons of treated water into Geller Ditch and Eel River.

The agency will host a 30-day public comment period before it issues a final decision.

Town officials hoped to build their own plant due to Huntertown's rapid growth and rate increases by Fort Wayne City Utilities. Huntertown pays Fort Wayne about $950,000 a year to process its waste. That contract expires in April.

A spokeswoman for Fort Wayne's utility says the city believes IDEM took appropriate action.
