INDIANAPOLIS -
A new downtown event kicks off later this morning along Georgia Street, home of the Super Bowl village.
The city spent $12-million on redoing Georgia Street and it opened just in time for the Super Bowl, hosting concerts, food and drink vendors and other entertainment. A million people wound up visiting over a ten-day period, definitely making the venue the place to be during Super Bowl Week.
Since then, Georgia Street hasn't seen much activity, other than some repairs. So now, Indianapolis Downtown, Inc., which manages the venue, is launching Second Thursdays to get people back down there.
They stress the events are all free.
"It's not about generating funds," said Taylor Newell of Downtown, Inc. "We want to generate more popularity around Georgia Street. We have a fantastic product here and it's finally a great opportunity to use that outside the super bowl and that's what we're really pushing."
The idea is to once again turn the street into a hub of activity. So every second Thursday, Indianapolis Downtown, Inc. will line up entertainment and other reasons to come down.
They're not expecting Super bowl crowds, but hoping people give it a try.
"We're not shooting for specific numbers," Newell said, "But we want excitement out here and people having a good time. Whether it's 500 people or a couple thousand, what we really want is excitement."
Today's activities run from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Drum Corps. International performs every hour today. And visitors can shoot hoops play games of corn hole.
The Colts Cheerleaders will also sign autographs between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and again between 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
