Beech Grove rejects smoking ban for bars

BEECH GROVE -

Smoking at bars will continue being legal in a Marion County community after its mayor says smoker have flocked there to avoid the ban the covers most of the county.

The 5-2 vote by the Beech Grove City Council rejected a smoking ban identical to that approved by the Indianapolis City-County Council in April. That ordinance doesn't cover some smaller communities in the county such as Beech Grove.

Beech Grove Mayor Dennis Buckley tells The Indianapolis Star that the city's bar owners came out against the smoking ban after their businesses became busier with the Indianapolis ban.

Harvey's Tavern co-owner Jan Oates says many of her nonsmoking customers support giving the business the choice on whether to allow smoking.
