Police: Warsaw toddler's death appears accidental

Posted: Updated:

WARSAW, Ind. (AP) - Authorities are investigating the death of an 18-month-old boy in northern Indiana.

The Kosciusko County Coroner's Office says a preliminary autopsy indicates Payton Brettell died Monday of positional asphyxia. Police say they believe the death was accidental.

Police said they were called to the home of the boy's baby sitter in Warsaw about 1:40 p.m. Monday. His parents, David and Nova Brettell, tell WSBT-TV that their son may have strangled himself when he climbed into a car seat after awakening from a nap.

The case remains under investigation by the Warsaw Police Department, the Kosciusko County Coroner's Office and Child Protective Services.
