Pence wants more farm promotion, technology

Posted: Updated:

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana's candidates for governor are sparring over farm policy.

Mike Pence's Republican running mate, lieutenant governor nominee Sue Ellspermann, said Tuesday the state should do more to promote Indiana farm exports. She's also calling for a joint venture among the state, Purdue University, Dow AgroSciences and other partners in developing new agriculture technology.

Democratic candidate John Gregg is criticizing Pence for voting against federal farm bills during his dozen years in Congress. He points to Pence's inclusion in a group of Congressional Republicans who left Washington last week without approving a new farm bill.

Gregg and Pence are running in November's election for governor with Libertarian Rupert Boneham. Gov. Mitch Daniels is barred by law from seeking a third term.
