Southwest Indiana town looks to sell land with large cross

DUGGER -

An advocacy group's attorney says a southwestern Indiana town's plan to sell off property where a 26-foot-tall cross stands is appropriate as long as the land is sold at market value and available to all bidders.

The Dugger Town Council unanimously agreed Monday night to have an appraisal made of the less-than-half acre site. The action comes after the town received a complaint last month from the Washington-based Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

An attorney for the group says the cross is a clear case of the town endorsing Christianity and that the land sale can't be a sweetheart deal.

The Sullivan Daily Times reports resident Louie Bonham helped build the cross a couple years ago and wants to buy the land so it can stay.
