Driver killed when car falls from northern Indiana overpass

WESTVILLE -

State police say a northern Indiana man died after his car drove off an Indiana Toll Road overpass and struck a semitrailer on the highway.

Police say investigators don't know why the car driven by 20-year-old Ryan Smith of LaPorte went off the overpass taking a LaPorte County road over the highway late Sunday. Smith's car hit a trailer hauling industrial equipment, rolled through the median several times and was hit by another semi in the opposite lanes.

Police say Smith died early Monday at a South Bend hospital and that the truck drivers weren't injured.

All lanes of the highway were closed for more than four hours after the crash in the rural area about 30 miles west of South Bend.
