Overnight fire displaces eight on southeast side

INDIANAPOLIS -

Two people were taken to area hospitals and eight total people were displaced in an early morning apartment fire at M & T Apartments in the 3100 block E. Bradbury Avenue.

Dispatched at 3:10 a.m., crews found smoke showing from the brick veneered building on the southeast side.

According to IFD spokesman Larry Tracy, one of those injured was Charles Wilson, who suffers from COPD, and went to IU-Health Methodist Hospital.

Edward Cottner suffered cuts to his right arm from breaking his second floor window and using it to escape the smoke. He was taken to Community South.

Only one apartment sustained fire damage. But smoke and water damaged five other units, and displaced eight residents total.

Tracy said the results could have been much worse if apartment residents Ronald Wright and Ronald Price did not help 23-year-old Tykesha Meriweather and her two sons escape from their second floor apartment window.  Ms. Meriweather and her children suffered no injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
