Britain beats US for gold in women's team pursuit

LONDON, ENGLAND -

The British women's pursuit track cycling team shattered its own world record for the second time Saturday and beat the United States to win the Olympic gold medal.

Dani King, Laura Trott and Joanna Rowsell delivered the home nation its fourth track cycling gold in five events. They finished in 3 minutes, 14.051 seconds to make the record they set earlier in the day - 3:14.682 - laughable.

The team celebrated the first women's team pursuit gold medal of the Olympics by gathering on the backstretch for a hug, cheered on by Paul McCartney and about 6,000 of their newest friends.

The U.S. team of Sarah Hammer of Temecula, Calif., Dotsie Bausch of Louisville, Ky., and Lauren Tamayo of Barto, Pa., finished in 3:19.727 for silver, while Canada put together its best ride of the Olympics to earn the bronze.
