Weather service: Macroburst hit Oakland

OAKLAND -

The National Weather Service says a severe thunderstorm that damaged homes, businesses and trees in a southwestern Indiana city produced a "macroburst" that swept the community with 110 mph winds.

Staff from the weather service's Paducah, Ky., office toured hard-hit areas of Oakland City and eastern Gibson County after Tuesday's storm. They concluded the widespread damage was caused by an intense downward-moving gust of wind called a macroburst that the storm unleashed.

Tuesday's storm also dropped large hail that injured four people taking part in a parade kicking off Oakland City's annual Sweet Corn Festival.

The weather service says the storm's high winds snapped or uprooted thousands of trees and left about 80 homes and businesses with major damage in Gibson County. Another 250 homes suffered minor damage.
