Earlham cancels Lehrer's speaking engagement

RICHMOND -

Earlham College has canceled a speaking engagement for a writer who resigned from The New Yorker and had sales of his best-selling book halted after he acknowledged fabricating quotes by musician Bob Dylan.

The Palladium-Item reports Jonah Lehrer was scheduled to speak at the eastern Indiana university on Aug. 21. Academic Dean Greg Mahler says Lehrer's lecture was to be sponsored by Earlham's Robert Simpson Charles Lectureship in Ethics Endowed Fund.

Earlham events coordinator Lynn Knight says Lehrer's agent has pledged to reimburse the college for all monies advanced for the appearance. Lehrer will be replaced by author David Ebenbach, a visiting writing professor from Georgetown.
