Atlanta region shoots down transportation tax

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A proposed penny sales tax to fund billions in transportation projects in metro Atlanta has failed and future solutions to the political gridlock are hard to see.

A day after Tuesday's primary election, supporters vow to change the minds of voters who rejected the ballot issue by a 2-to-1 margin.

Republican Gov. Nathan Deal supported the plan, but now says he and the Legislature have little interest in revisiting it.

Meanwhile, Atlanta's population continues to grow, fanning out farther from the capital's core.

Observers say lawmakers will have to come up with an answer, and the fix will likely not be an easy one.
